Outcome expectancies figure prominently in these examples, with consistent and strong positive correlations noted between positive outcome expectancies and engagement in such behaviours.
For example, for a person holding positive outcome expectancies about, and a belief in the ability, to self-injure, NSSI may become a viable emotion regulation strategy.
Consequently, it is not unrealistic that exposure to NSSI in peer groups or in media (e.g. films, online) might inform the outcome expectancies an individual has about NSSI, facilitating positive outcome expectancies when the outcome is favourable and negative outcome expectancies when the consequences are undesirable.
